Commonwealth Gold Medalist Nooh Dastgir To Represent Pakistan At Powerlifting Championships once again. The event takes place in Sun City, South Africa. Nooh, hailing from Gujranwala, is only 26 years old. He aims to make a mark in a new discipline.
Alongside him, fellow athletes Hasnain Raza, Haider Ali, and Dr. Adnan will also compete. Each will showcase their skills in various master’s categories. Their participation highlights the strength and talent of Pakistani athletes.
You might wonder why Nooh switched from weightlifting to powerlifting. After his gold medal win at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, things took a turn. In August 2022, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) suspended the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF). Consequently, the PSB formed an interim board, which led to conflict. Unfortunately, the PWLF accused Nooh of siding with a rival organization. As a result, this allegation barred him from participating in weightlifting competitions. However, Nooh continues to deny these claims.
Despite the challenges, Nooh found a way to keep competing. He transitioned to strongman competitions and quickly excelled. Recently, he won the gold medal at the Hercules Columns competition during the Pahlavon Mahmud Strongman Games 2024 in Uzbekistan.
Now, Nooh aims to add to Pakistan’s medal tally at the Commonwealth event. Notably, the Sohail sisters, Sybil, Veronika, and Twinkle, have already earned gold, silver, and bronze medals. With such a strong team, hopes are high for more victories. The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships promise to be an exciting showcase of talent and determination.
